Bilking Taxpayers Is Fair Play in Massachusetts
Reading the article “Black Hole of Boston” (Dec. 10-23), I was astounded at how much money could be bilked from us taxpayers. But on further reflection, I realized that this is nothing more than business and politics as usual in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. I was reared there and lived there for 25 years. This was the dominant culture in 1965 when I moved there; it was the dominant culture in 1990 when I left; it is still the dominant culture.
Take, for example, the intersection of U.S. 1, Interstate 93, Storrow Drive and the Central Artery. Southbound, there are five or six lanes of I-93 and U.S. 1 merging into three and, not 200 feet later, splitting into Storrow Drive and the Central Artery. No reasonably ethical engineer could have designed or approved that intersection, but there it is – a monument to Bay State business and politics.
To adapt a popular quip, “It’s the culture, stupid!” As is true everywhere, people deserve the government they elect. That culture is one of the reasons I have no desire to return to Massachusetts either to work or live.

Congratulations to John Pike for investigating the corruption of the Big Dig now four It is true that the local pundits have not made a sound about the overrun which points to the collusion of the Boston Media and the politicians. You should have seen the ranks slose around Billy Bulger when he was asked to testify against his brother. (Barnicle et alia came to his defense) There’s another project for Mr Pike, though he’d be found at the bottom of the Neponset River before he got to the bottom of the story.
Black Hole of Washington?
One quibble with John Pike’s excellent article “Black Hole of Boston” (Dec. 10-23, 2002):
“No government boondoggle in the history of man comes close to the cost of the Black Hole of Boston”?
I think you could argue that $8 billion in cost overruns for Washington’s Metro is a pretty good second place!

Expert Won't Vouch For Big Dig Tunnel Safety 33 minutes ago Local - WCVB TheBostonChannel.com Leaks in the Interstate 93 section of tunnel on the $14. 6 billion Big Dig, and recent cases of fireproofing falling down inside the roadway, have now led to an even more troublesome report. A Big Dig engineer says he cannot guarantee the I-93 tunnel is safe to drive through. NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that an independent investigator who was hired to look into the tunnel leaks after they were discovered testified on Beacon Hill last fall, saying he thought the highway was safe. "I have no reason to believe that there is any risk to public health and safety with the complex as it exists today," Jack Lemley testified last November. Now, however, Lemley is not so certain. According to the Boston Globe, Lemley wrote a letter dated March 9, 2005 saying "I am now unable to express an opinion as to the safety of the I-93 portion of the Central Artery ... my modified position is necessary due to a revised understanding of the magnitude of problems that we became aware of following our testimony of Nov. 30, 2004." Lemley went on to write that there was new information indicating that at least 44 large sections of tunnel wall contain construction defects. Water and ice have damaged fireproofing materials, some of which recently fell onto the roadway. Lemley also wrote that Big Dig officials have prevented him from seeing records and data related to new problems and added that officials do not appear to have a plan for fixing tunnel leak problems. A spokesman for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority told the Globe Chairman Matthew Amorello had not received Lemley's letter yet. "We believe the tunnels are perfectly safe. If we ever had a reasonable inkling otherwise we would close the tunnels. Public safety is always our first concern," Doug Hatchett said. Gov. Mitt Romney's spokesman said Lemley's letter is a cause for concern. Romney has been calling for Amorello's resignation for several months. 14 billion and they can't get it right???? Man.....

Well as some of the locals joke, all they're really
accomplishing is putting the traffic above ground to below
ground
One positive thing is that they've been able to tear down lots of the roads above ground so people now have a view outside their windows rather than looking at concrete.

A few months ago they found a huge leak, it was basically
raining into the tunnel and after inspecting they found around
100 holes....
The whole thing is corrupt.

Haha nice...
And because the construction unions bulldozed a projectwide labor agreement with elected officials, ensuring union wages for all, even the lowest-paid Big Dig construction workers -- the laborers -- earn a minimum of $34.50 hourly with benefits. Kyle Meleski, a spokesman for a local builder's organization, says if the Big Dig simply got rid of its project labor agreement it would mean a savings of 10 to 15 percent On Sept. 6, a date arbitrarily chosen, Insight watched a Big Dig work site with watch in hand, arriving during the lunch break at 12:15 p.m. From the moment the break ended at 12:30, Insight's reporter saw 23 men idling until 1:30, when eight workers appeared to be both talking about work and socializing until 1:50. During this period, two men were cleaning concrete barriers for perhaps 10 minutes, and no one helped them. This might have gone on all afternoon, but the Insight reporter had to leave the site for an appointment. I should go work at the Big Dig

This is the biggest construction disaster in the history of the
world. The new Twin Towers in New Youk may eclipse it though.
